Συχνές Ερωτήσεις / Common Questions
Q. My car does not have a turbo or supercharger will the AEM FIC do anything
for me?
A. Yes, you can customise your fuelling to suit your car perfectly. And you can
also customise igntion timing to get the best power
Q. I have had my car converted to run on LPG, will the AEM give me any
performance or fuel economy benefits?
A. Yes, when an engine is running on LPG it can run much more igntion advance
meaning more power when you need it and better fuel economy when you are driving
normally. The AEM FIC has the ability to store 2 programs. You can use one to
run on petrol the other to run on LPG. As a safety measure for inexperienced
tuners the AEM software is designed to retard igntion timing only. If you are
confident you can use the AEM FIC to advance ignition timing by changing the
"base" timing of your engine and adjusting the AEM FIC accordingly
Q. Do I have to pay someone to map my car?
A. If you have the right tools (the most important one being a wideband lambda
sensor) you can tune your car yourself without having to pay anyone.
Q. Do I need a base map to get my car running after fitting a AEM FIC?
A. No, your car will run exactly the same as it did before. The AEM FIC will
only change how your car runs if you tell it to.
Q. I do not know how an engine works, will I be able to use an AEM FIC?
A. No, you will need a good understanding of how an engine operates before using
the FIC. Engine damage can be caused if the ECU is adjusted incorrectly
Q. How much power can I expect to gain by tuning my standard non-turbo car
with an FIC?
A. It depends on the car and the condition of the car. Some cars are mapped
better than others from the factory. As an estimate a maximum of 10% more power
can be gained.
Q. My car is turbo from the factory but I have changed the turbo to a larger
item, can the FIC tune my car?
A. Yes.
Q. I can get my car mapped with a generic tune from my local tuner for a
stock car, is the FIC better or worse than this?
A. It depends on the program you are using. If your car is stock and the
program has been done well, the results could be close between the generic tune
and the FIC. The OBD tune will be much simpler to do though as you will need to
wire the FIC into the car and the OBD you just need to plug into the dashboard.
If you want a perfect tune I would say the FIC will have the edge but it will be
more difficult to install. It depends what you are looking for.
If you are leaving your car stock it may be better to go for the generic
tune. If you plan on adding performance parts to your car over time, the FIC
could work out much better in the long run because you will be able to change
the program every time you change a part.
Q. How much power does the FIC support?
A. The FIC will not be the limiting factor for power production.
Q. Can the FIC control boost?
A. The FIC 8 has a built in boost controller with 16x16 resolution
Q. Can I put in target AFR ratios so the FIC can tune itself automatically?
A. No, the AEM FIC does not have this feature.
Q. Does the AEM software have issues with Greek letters?
A. Yes, the computer which you use to tune the AEM FIC must have all settings
set to English or the software will not function properly.
Q. Do I have to cut into my car's wiring to install the AEM FIC?
A. No, if you want to leave the original wiring untouched AEM sell a range of
extension harnesses which you plug in between the original harness and the ECU.
You can then cut and splice into the extension harness and leave your stock
wiring untouched.
The extension harness also makes installation much much easier as you do not
have to carry out the wiring in the foot well of your car. You can do the
necessary wiring on a desk away from the car. We fully recommend using an
extension harness when installing the FIC
Q. Does Street & Circuit sell AEM extension harnesses?
A. Yes, please check the website for a list of harnesses and prices or call us
Q. Does the AEM FIC have launch control, anti lag and/or flat shifting?
A. Unfortunately no! These features can be found on the AEM EMS standalone
engine management system.
Q. Do I have to pay a yearly subscription to use the AEM software or to get
software updates?
A. No, the AEM software is free.
Q. Does the AEM FIC work on diesel cars?
A. No, it cannot control the amount of fuel injected into the engine
Q. I have heard bad things about piggyback units, things like the ECU will re
tune itself back to what it was and that the standard ECU will re adjust to the
things that you change, does the AEM have the same problems?
A. No. The AEM FIC has 2 major differences from other piggback units on the
market. The first is that the FIC does not need to manipulate sensors to get the
ECU to increase fuel. The AEM FIC controls the fuel injectors directly. The
second difference is that the FIC also controls the Lambda sensor which means
the ECU is not aware of any changes to fuelling.
Another feature of the FIC is the timing, the only reason the standard ECU
will adjust the timing away from its normal map is if it detects
knock/detonation. This is a good thing. Although the AEM FIC adjusts the timing
you still keep the safeguards that the car manufacturer built into the car which
is very nice and useful.
The problem with other piggyback ECUs is that they do not control the
injector directly and they do not control the lambda signal which means they are
of limited use on modern cars because the ECU will revert to the original tune.
The AEM FIC will not let the standard ECU untune itself if the FIC is tuned
properly.
