Brakes/ΦρέναBrakes work by converting kinetic energy into heat energy. Brakes/φρένα do this by friction i.e. one surface rubbing against another. In the case of a car's braking system this takes the form of a brake pads/τακάκια rubbing against a cast iron brake disc/δίσκοι φρένων to create friction which in turn creates heat which in turn slows the car down.The faster the kinetic energy of the car can be turned into heat energy the faster the car will slow down. This conversion of kinetic energy into heat energy has a limit with regards to how fast it can happen. This limit is the amount of grip the tyre has with the road. In most standard brake systems the limiting factor to the effectiveness of the brakes/φρένα is the tyres. In other words, the brakes φρένα on a standard car have the power to lock the wheels or to put it another way the brakes φρένα could stop the car even faster but the car's tyres have lost grip. Although the standard brakes/φρένα can do this once or twice the problem comes in when you want to stop the car on the limit of grip numerous times in a short period of time. For example driving down a mountain or driving on a race track. The standard braking system is designed to bring a car to a stop on the limit of tyre grip once or maybe twice from high speed. After this the brakes φρένα begin to fade. Brake fade happens when the temperature of the brake pad becomes so high that the amount of friction between the brake disc/δίσκοι φρένων and the brake pad drops. Brake pads/τακάκια have a specific heat range in which they can operate. If the brake become so hot that the pads are outside of their working temperature range their coefficient of friction drops rapidly. When the brake pads/τακακια fade the tyres are no longer the weakest chain in the brake system. When brake pads fade they no longer give enough friction against the brake disc/δίσκοι φρένων to lock the tyres. The symptoms of brake fade are when you press the brake pedal as hard as you can but the car does not stop any faster.
